In the Red

"Red Tara: The Moon"
7" x 10" mixed media on paper

Women have power.

The conduit of life itself
flows through us,
primal, vital, real.

Our cycles are matched to the moon,
who shows her true red face
once a season

The messy ferocity of our love
allows us to carry
our families
on our backs
from cradle to grave.

Our terrifying power
means we've always
had to be controlled,
but there's no conquering
the heart.

Red Tara speaks
of surrender
to a truth we already know:

We can't help the world
if we hate ourselves.

We can't expand other minds
if we close ours.

And we won't topple barriers
if we keep thinking
we have to be
more like men
to do it.
